Sake is a rice wine from Japan. Related to the term sake is "Mirin", a sweetish rice wine with higher sugar and lower alcohol content, which is used exclusively as a seasoning.

In terms of manufacturing process, sake is more similar to beer than wine: Before brewing, the sugar must first be tapped. The alcohol content of sake rice wine is higher than that of traditional grape wine. In Japan, the sake share of total alcohol consumption is about 4%. By far the most common alcoholic drink in Japan is beer.

Basically, a distinction is made between "Futsu" and "Junmai" qualities in the sake of sake. Futsu sake is a standard quality equivalent to about 80% of the sake produced. Junmai qualities, such as the sake offered here, are superior and are made from polished rice grains.
