Whiskey has been produced in Tennessee for centuries, but because of few licenses, most producers produced illegally - these spirits are called moonshines. However, when the recession hit the U.S. in 2008, several states were looking for a way to expand job openings and maintain tax revenues. One option to accomplish both was to relax laws around liquor distilleries. Since 2010, the Ole Smoky Distillery, also known as "The Holler," at the foot of the Smoky Mountains, has attracted many visitors and has been the most visited distillery in the United States since its inception. Now, with the help of Master Distiller Dave Pickerell, the company produces 15 different varieties of Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine in its two branches, distilled according to a 100-year-old family recipe and with local ingredients, and sold in traditional preserving jars. The Ole Smoky Butter Pecan is made with butter, cream, caramel and roasted pecans.
