About Montes

As a lucky charm, a guardian angel statue stands in every Montes wine cellar. It has accompanied top winemaker Aurelio Montes, an outstanding personality, since the winery’s founding and continues to watch over the wonderful wines. It is not only because of this, but also thanks to his intuition for new terroirs and exceptional wines that Aurelio Montes has made it onto the international wine map. He discovered Chile’s potential and produces wines of the highest quality. Today, the Montes winery includes vineyards in Apalta, Marchigüe, and the cooler Zapallar region. It remains family-owned, with Aurelio Montes naturally at the helm, supported by his son, Aurelio Montes Jr.

The Region

In terms of wine production, the Central Valley is one of South America’s most important and largest wine-growing regions. It extends from the coastal plains of western Colchagua to the foothills of the Andes in Puente Alto and is divided into the subregions of Colchagua and Cachapoal. Over its 400 kilometers in length, it offers great climatic diversity and very different soils, resulting in an enormous range of wines, from traditional Chilean styles to fashionable Bordeaux-style wines. In any case, Chile’s star grape, Carmenere, plays the leading role here. In the cooler regions, however, winemakers are increasingly experimenting with grape varieties such as Viognier, Riesling, and even Gewürztraminer.
