About Jean-René Germanier

These noble wines originate from the dry and warm microclimate of Balavaud, a hamlet in the municipality of Vétroz in the heart of the Valais and the Rhône Valley. For Gilles Besse and Jean-René Germanier, quality is the top priority, which is expressed in their exceptional crus. They purposefully limit their yields to obtain the most concentrated wines possible and consciously focus on the minimal use of pesticides and a gentle approach to nature.

The Region

Over a third of all Swiss wine production comes from the driest canton in Switzerland, the Valais. The vines, which grow on steep slopes from 375 m above sea level up to 1100 meters, benefit from an extraordinary climate with enormous temperature differences between day and night, hot, dry summers and plenty of Föhn winds in autumn, as well as the protection of the surrounding Alps. On the small, mostly terraced plots with very diverse soils, a great deal of manual labor is the norm. In addition to growing the main grape varieties Pinot Noir, Chasselas (Fendant), and Gamay, the Valais is distinguished by the careful cultivation of many old and indigenous grape varieties such as Humagne Rouge, Cornalin, and Heida.
