The Region

Southern Italy’s Puglia is one of the country’s most productive wine-growing regions. Stretching from the spur of the “boot” near Foggia to the tip of the heel beyond Lecce, Puglia covers 400 kilometres. The area is home to most of Southern Italy’s grape varieties, around 80 per cent of which are red. A Mediterranean climate and limestone subsoils topped with iron-oxide-rich layers create perfect conditions for viticulture. The grapes ripen optimally during the hot, dry summers, producing deep, dark, earthy and full-bodied wines. Unlike other southern regions, there are almost no mountains here; the landscape consists mainly of high plains and lowlands. A wine-growing area with enormous potential—the possibilities offered by its countless indigenous grape varieties are far from fully explored. Today, Puglia already produces some of the highest-quality wines, renowned for their intensity and richness, with the finest qualities grown on the Salento peninsula.
