The Region

The Southern Italian region of Apulia is one of the country's most productive wine-growing regions. From the spur of the boot near Foggia to the tip of the heel behind Lecce, Apulia stretches over 400 kilometers. The area has the most grape varieties in Southern Italy, around 80 percent of which are red. The Mediterranean climate and calcareous subsoils with iron-oxide-rich layers above create perfect conditions for viticulture. In the hot, dry summers, the grapes ripen optimally, and the wines become deep dark, earthy and full-bodied. In contrast to the other southern regions, there are hardly any mountains here; the landscape consists mainly of high plateaus and lowlands. A wine-growing area with enormous potential – the possibilities of the countless autochthonous grape varieties are far from being fully exploited. Even today, Apulia offers the highest quality wines of great intensity and fullness; the finest qualities among them grow on the Salento peninsula.
