In 1827, the 18-year-old George Ballantines opened a grocery store in Edinburgh, where he also began trading in Highland whiskies. After the death of George Ballantines I. his son George II. and later his grandson George III. ran the whisky business. In 1895 he was appointed Royal Purveyor to the Court by Queen Victoria. Ballantines was exported in vast quantities to America and Canada during the prohibition in the USA. Today Ballantines is owned by Pernod Ricard and with 5 million cases sold per year it is the third largest whisky producer in the world.
