In 1827, 18-year-old George Ballantines opened a grocery store in Edinburgh, where he began trading highland whiskeys. After the death of George Ballantines I led his son George II and later his grandson George III. the whiskey business. In 1895 he was appointed royal court purveyor by Queen Victoria. Ballantines was exported to America and Canada in droves during Prohibition in the United States. Today Ballantines owns Pernod Ricard and ranks third worldwide with 5 million boxes sold per year.
