The Region

The Palatinate is Germany's second largest and one of the most important wine-growing regions. It is located in the west of the country between the Rhine and the Haardt mountain range, a natural extension of the Alsatian Vosges. With up to 1800 hours of sunshine annually, it is one of the regions with the mildest temperatures in the country. On densely planted vineyard slopes – there are 600 vines per inhabitant! – along the Rhine with an area of 25 by 75 kilometers, the vineyards for Germany's finest Riesling and Pinot Noir wines thrive on soils of sand, loam, marl, and clay. In terms of quality, the Palatinate is thus one of Germany's most promising wine-growing regions.
