The Region

Ticino is the southernmost canton in Switzerland and, thanks to its climate with the highest summer temperatures in the country, is excellently suited for viticulture. In over 80 percent of the nine districts of Bellinzona, Blenio, Leventina, Locarno, Mendrisio, Riviera, Vallemaggia, and Mesolcina, the Bordeaux grape Merlot is cultivated. Due to the alpine topography, the wine-growing areas are scattered and consist of small plots on mountain slopes with a thin layer of soil over granite bedrock. Nowhere else in Switzerland is the density of quality winemakers and wines higher, which led to the introduction of a system similar to the Italian DOC in 1997. The full-bodied, aromatic, and age-worthy red wines are among the best in Switzerland and have reached an international standard.
