The Region

Ticino is the southernmost canton of Switzerland and, thanks to its climate, which features the highest summer temperatures in the country, it is excellently suited for viticulture. The Bordeaux grape Merlot is cultivated in over 80 percent of the nine districts: Bellinzona, Blenio, Leventina, Locarno, Mendrisio, Riviera, Vallemaggia, and Mesolcina. Due to the alpine topography, the wine-growing areas are scattered and consist of small plots on mountain slopes with a thin layer of soil over a granite base. Nowhere else in Switzerland is the density of quality winemakers and wines higher, which led to the introduction of a system similar to the Italian DOC in 1997. The full-bodied, aromatic, and age-worthy red wines are among the best in Switzerland and reach an international level.
