About Alain Brumont

The unconventional winemaker Alain Brumont grows the ancient, small-berried indigenous Tannat grape in Madiran in southwest France. Brumont has succeeded in taming this highly tannic, strongly astringent grape variety in the finest plots of the terroir: at Montus, with its stony, steep south-facing slopes; on the ironstone and manganese soils of the Boucassé plateaus; and in Gascony, with its limestone subsoil. He carefully vinifies it in new barriques to produce powerful, fruit-driven wines that are elegant, understated and exceptionally long-lived.

The region

The Sud-Ouest region encompasses the wine-growing areas of southwest France, excluding Bordeaux and Cognac. The areas around Bordeaux, Gascony and the Basque Country are climatically influenced by the nearby Atlantic, while some inland areas benefit from drier, hotter summers. Numerous rivers have created soils consisting primarily of clay, sand and gravel, while the foothills of the Pyrenees and the plateaus offer a variety of rock types. In the Haut-Pays, many of the same grape varieties as in Bordeaux are grown, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, but the wines are less well known and therefore often more attractively priced. The south is home to one of Europe’s most intriguing collections of local grape varieties: names such as Abouriou, Baroque, Duras and Petit Courbu can be found here, crafted into exciting wines by adventurous winemakers.
