About Alain Brumont
The unconventional winemaker Alain Brumont grows the ancient, small-berried autochthonous Tannat grape variety in Madiran in southwestern France. Brumont has succeeded in taming this highly astringent grape variety, known for its high tannin content, in the best plots of the terroir: in Montus with its stony, steep southern slopes, on the Boucassé plateaus with ironstone and manganese soils, and in Gascogne with its limestone subsoil. He carefully vinifies it in new barriques to produce elegant, discreet, and extremely long-lived wines with powerful fruit.
The Region
The Sud-Ouest region encompasses the wine-growing areas of southwestern France, with the exception of Bordeaux and Cognac. The areas around Bordeaux, Gascogne, and the Basque Country are climatically influenced by the nearby Atlantic, while some inland regions benefit from drier, hotter summers. Numerous rivers create predominantly clay, sand, and gravel soils, while the foothills of the Pyrenees and the high plateaus form a variety of rock types. In Haut-Pays, largely the same grape varieties as in Bordeaux are grown, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, although the wines are less well known and therefore often more affordable. In the south grows one of the most interesting collections of local grape varieties in all of Europe: here you will find names such as Abouriou, Baroque, Duras, and Petit Courbu, which are vinified into exciting wines by adventurous winemakers.
